All our tuition at Forth Valley IAM is one-to-one in car. We don't run classroom sessions, it is all practical.
We allocate you to an "Observer". Observers are Full Members who have undergone additional training and obtained further driving and tuition qualifications. Their job is to sit in the passenger seat of your car as you drive and to observe how you drive and then advise you on what to adapt to reach Advanced Test Standard.
Drives typically last 60-90 minutes including a feedback session at the end where you get a written assessment sheet so you can see how you are progressing.
The observer will suggest what to practice before the next drive.
The number of drives required to get to Advance Test Standard obviously varies depending on a number of factors but 8-10 drives is common.
Typically drives are once a week but you and your observer will arrange mutually convenient times. Start / Finish locations can also be mutually arranged.
Once you and your observer feel you have reached test standard you will often go for a drive with another observer as a quality check and also to give you some experience of a "mock test". Then we will put you in for the Advanced Test.
The Advanced test itself is very like one of the Observed Drives and except the observer is replaced by an examiner. Examiners are typically Police Advanced Drivers. They are looking for the same things as your observer was.
Some associates (that's what we call members who have not yet passed the Advance Test) choose after a few weeks that they have improved enough to have achieved their goal of being a safer driver but don't feel the need to go all the way to the Advanced Test. That is fine if that is what you choose.
We cater for all ages (a very wide range!), we have some disabled drivers, some who are getting back into driving after many years of relying on others to drive, some who have just passed their DVLA test and are keen to understand how to be a very good driver.
You receive some written learning materials that help you understand some of the advanced techniques and your observer will suggest which pages to read between each drive.
We have an "Associates Charter" that sets out how we mutually work together to get you up to Advanced Test standard. Please have a read of our charter before signing up so you understand the commitment you are making.
We also hold optional evening meetings during the winter on interesting driving/riding topics that enable you to meet and talk with other associates and full members.
All of the above is available for £200, including as many driving sessions as it takes.
